On one of my Dental visits my Dentist noticed I was wearing down the enamel of my teeth due to my grinding at night. He suggested a Dental Mouth Guard. What is Bruxism?
Bruxism (teeth grinding) is the involuntary grinding or clenching of the teeth. Research estimates that approximately 80% of Americans suffer from clenching and grinding at some point. This is a subconscious behavior done mainly while one sleeps. Bruxism can generate tremendous force on the teeth causing broken teeth, loose fillings, loss of tooth enamel and damage to the TMJ joint. Bruxing can also cause teeth to become more sensitive to hot and cold foods and liquids. The cause of bruxism is not completely known, but many agree that stress and anxiety play a major role.
How do I know if I grind?
Most of us do not know we are grinding our teeth. Many times it is your Dentist or Dental Hygienist that will first see the wear on your teeth and inform you about your grinding. Many times it is your sleep partner that tells you after being kept awake by your grinding. Some other signs are sore fascial muscles, morning headaches and neck and ear pain.
How does the Mouth Guard work?
The Mouth Guard works by providing a cushion between the upper and lower teeth which will prevent you from "locking" your teeth together when you grind or clench, this will prevent the over activation of the facial muscles which causes the pain.
