This is a King Super 20 tenor saxophone, with sterling silver neck, sunburst engraving on the bell keys and full mother of pearl on the key touches. The serial number is #2876XX, which I believe dates the horn to about 1947. No mouthpiece included with this horn.
The case is in decent shape for its age, with nicks and dings picked up over the years. The inside is worn but functional. One end of the case has had some cloth tape applied to the corner leather reinforcement by a previous owner. Both spring latches work, and a middle latch was added for additional security. There is a handle on one end of the case.
The intonation is good and this horn plays with a great tone - the jazz tone it became famous for. The pads are old but all are in good shape and holding, and I've detected none sticking.
The sterling silver neck is in good shape, and the serial number on the neck matches the serial number on the horn.
There are some scratches near the left guard where a previous owner must have rubbed regularly - see associated photo.
I've had this horn for about 15 years and never had a problem with it whatsoever. I don't know what some previous owner did with the finish. It appears they may have attempted to re-lacquer without cleaning and buffing first, but I'm not sure. The bell engraving, etc., is not nearly as nice looking as it could have been, or could be, with the job done correctly or having the lacquer removed entirely. The lacquer appears too bright and if I was going to keep the horn forever I'd have the lacquer removed.
There are no dents that I find, to speak of, just a minor issue with the bottom brace by a previous owner. I tried to photo it, but it was impossible to capture.
Here's a chance to own a classic read-to-play Super 20 tenor with great sound at a reduced price due to appearance of the finish. A great gig horn for somebody not as interested in the finish as a collector, or somebody who might plan to have the lacquer removed.
The last thing I want is for anybody to bid on this horn and expect a brand new looking horn and case to arrive. This is an old, vintage instrument in its original case. The horn plays wonderfully but has the finish issues noted. I'm not trying to convince anybody not to bid, I simply want bidders to have the best understanding of the condition that I can provide. This horn is up for bid only in the 48 contiguous United States - U. S. bidders only. It will be shipped UPS Ground to an address only - cannot be shipped to a P. O. Box. Shipping will be $50.00. questions about the horn (from US bidders), but I'll no longer respond to questions asking me to end the auction early or to change the terms of
the auction. I believe it would be unfair to all to change the initial terms of the auction before the auction closes. Sorry to have to post this message.
