I bought a new GE fridge from Lowes and a filter came with it. I dont need it since I have my own filtration system before the water goes to the fridge.
This item is brand new and still sealed and unopen. Details on this filter are listed below:

Fits many GE refridgerators
The GE SmartWater MWF Cartridge fits GE and Hotpoint refrigerators with a round white plastic filter, typically mounted inside the refrigerator at the rear of the compartment - above the top shelf.
The MWF Filter plus a GE filter adapter can be used to replace these old metal canister filters:
* Sears / Kenmore
o 9905, 469905, 46-9905, 9905P, 04609905000
* Water by Culligan
o FXRC, FXRT, MXRC, HXRT, WR97X10006
The MWF Filter removes the following impurities from your drinking water:
* 99.00% of Lead
* 93.00% of Mercury
* 99.00% of Asbestos
* 96.00% of Benzene
* 99.00% of P-Dichlorobenzene
* 99.99% of Cysts
* 94.00% of Atrazine
* 99.00% of Alachlor
* 98.00% of Carbofuran
* 99.00% of Lindane
* 93.00% of Toxaphene

* 99.10% of Particulates (Class I)
As with all built-in refrigerator water filters, the MWF does not remove Fluoride
The MWF cartridge is tested and certified by NSF International to meet or exceed NSF/ANSI Standards 42 & 53
Rated Flow Rate: 0.5 gallons per minute at 60 psi
The SmartWater Filter MWF should be replaced every 6 months or when the "change filter" light comes on - whichever comes first.
Installing your new water filter:
1. Twist the old filter a half-turn counterclockwise
2. Pull the filter straight down and discard (don't worry, the water will shut off automatically)
3. Fill the new filter with water (you can use the cold water faucet on your kitchen sink)
4. Push the new filter up into the fridge until it stops
5. Twist the filter a half-turn clockwise
6. Reset your "change filter" light (if your fridge has one)
Resetting your "change filter" light:
* Press and hold the reset water filter button on the dispenser for 3 seconds.
